Living Seawalls

What are Living Seawalls?

The next generation of seawalls, engineered to protect shorelines and restore marine ecosystems. Living Seawalls™ are a 1:1 replacement for standard concrete seawalls. They are structurally identical to traditional concrete seawall panels, but also feature biomimicry designs and environmentally friendly material. With Living Seawalls you can transform your seawall into a beautiful artificial reef and better protect your property through wave dissipation.

Living Seawall Specifications
We use a 5,000 psi mortar that matches the strength of traditional precast concrete panels while minimizing environmental impact by resisting sulfate attack and maintaining stable pH levels in marine environments.
Living Seawalls™ are engineered with customizable reinforcement options, including steel, galvanized steel, basalt, and more, to meet the requirements of any project.
Living Seawalls™ provide 2x the surface area of traditional flat seawalls, boosting marine biodiversity by offering complex textures for organisms to attach, shelter, and thrive. These intricate surfaces create microhabitats that support water-filtering marine life.

Using advanced 3D-printing, Living Seawalls™ mimic natural coastal features like mangrove roots (4-8″ deep). Designs replicate reef and shoreline structures, creating habitats with voids, ledges, and overhangs that serve as refuge, feeding, and breeding grounds for diverse marine life. (see the results).

Designed to reduce shoreline erosion and dissipate wave energy, Living Seawalls™ provide superior coastal protection against storms and storm surges. Traditional seawall panels reflect nearly 100% of wave energy. Living Seawall panels reduce reflected wave energy by approximately 45%, minimizing scour and overtopping (see the results)

Our high-resolution 3D-printing process allows precise customization of Living Seawalls™ panels to exact project specifications for seamless integration.

The University of Miami’s Structures and Materials Laboratory conducted a comprehensive evaluation of the load capacity, failure mechanisms, and material performance of Kind Designs’ 3D-printed seawall panels compared to traditional precast concrete designs. The results confirmed that Kind Designs’ 3D concrete-printed panels meet all structural performance standards for conventional seawall applications.

Living Seawalls™ are engineered for straightforward installation by local seawall contractors, compatible with standard seawall construction methods such as king & batter piles and tie-back systems, facilitating smooth seawall installation.
Permitting Living Seawalls™ is as streamlined as traditional concrete seawalls. Additionally, Living Seawalls™ often qualify for exemptions from mitigation requirements, which can further accelerate project approval and reduce regulatory hurdles.
Living Seawalls™ offer all ecological and structural benefits at no additional cost compared to traditional seawalls. They also reduce overall project expenses through lower permit fees and minimized mitigation requirements, making them a cost-effective solution for coastal protection and marine habitat restoration.

FAQs
3D-printed seawall panels are an innovative solution and a direct structural replacement for traditional precast concrete seawalls used in seawall construction. Unlike conventional seawalls, which are typically flat and made using molds, 3D-printed panels offer 20x faster production and can incorporate complex biomimicry designs inspired by nature. These custom designs create habitat features that support diverse marine life, boost biodiversity, and improve water quality along urban shorelines. 3D-printing technology allows for precise customization tailored to project specifications, enhancing both coastal protection and marine habitat restoration.
All Living Seawall™ installations can be completed by any local marine contractor experienced in seawall construction. The panels fit seamlessly into new or existing seawall engineering plans. Installation steps typically involve site preparation, driving structural piles or tie-back systems, installing Living Seawall™ panels, and pouring the concrete cap. This process combines traditional construction methods with innovative designs to create resilient, nature-based coastal defenses that also foster marine biodiversity.
Finding a seawall contractor for a Living Seawall™ installation is easy. Our team can connect you with qualified marine contractors to ensure smooth installation. By partnering with contractors we help bring Living Seawalls™ to global communities including urban shorelines across the United States.
Living seawalls™ are cost comparable to traditional seawalls but offer significant added ecological benefits and faster seawall construction timelines. By integrating scientific research and innovative 3D-printing technology, these seawalls provide enhanced coastal protection and habitat restoration without a "green premium". Additionally, the cost savings from permit fee rebates and mitigation exemptions make Living Seawalls™ a more cost-effective option.
Many incentives encourage the adoption of Living Seawalls™, including permit fee rebates, mitigation cost savings, and environmental certification credits such as LEED points. Governments and organizations increasingly support these innovative solutions to strengthen climate resilience and restore natural ecosystems along urban shorelines. Ongoing scientific research and partnerships with institutions like Florida International University and the Sarasota Bay Estuary Program continue to validate the performance of Living Seawalls™, driving wider implementation and incentivization.
Living seawall™ panels are engineered for durability, with an expected lifespan of at least 70 years in harsh marine environments. This longevity is supported by scientific research and advanced materials, ensuring sustained coastal protection and habitat support. Compared to traditional seawalls, which last 50-70 years but lack ecological benefits, Living Seawalls™ offer a longer-term, nature-based solution that adapts to sea-level rise and storm surges.
Panel design is highly customizable, allowing you to select from a wide range of options or mimic local natural habitats such as rocky reefs or mangroves. Designs are inspired by marine science and developed in collaboration with research entities. The complex surface textures and biomimicry features incorporated in Living Seawall™ panels create microhabitats that attract native species, improve biodiversity, and enhance water quality. By bringing Living Seawalls™ to your city, you contribute to restoring marine ecosystems and protecting your community!
